How To Make Weighted Boxing/MMA Gloves - DIY Pounders

Watch the video below to see how you can make a pair of DIY Pounders - weighted boxing/MMA gloves.

3 Key Benefits from the Mass and Momentum

That extra weight changes everything. With each punch, the weight generates momentum that drives more force into the target, especially on a reflex-style bag like the Kewlus cobra bag. That momentum helps to transfer most of the kinetic energy into the target instead of letting it bounce back into your arm. The result?

1. Less Impact on Joints

Due to the forward momentum of the weighted glove, most of the impact force is transferred to the target - you will notice this because it bounces further. As a consequence there is less force applied back towards your arm - basic Newtonian physics. In other words, the joints take less of a hit on impact.

3. Greater Muscle Workout

Given the added weight, your muscles have to work harder to generate the momentum. The basic formula is F = m x a, where the Force you need to apply is directly proportional to the mass (weight) of the object (your gloved fist) and the acceleration of that object that results. In other words, with the added weight you will need to apply more force to accelerate your gloved fist towards the target. Even just holding the weighted gloves next to your chin will work you biceps and shoulders.

2. Greater Target Travel

The extra force applied to the target due to the forward momentum results in greater acceleration and thus greater distance covered by the target. This means that the target will also swing back further and come closer towards you, which is what you want the cobra bag to do so that you can practice blocking, slipping and ducking.

Parts:

  • Small hand weights 1-2 pounds each (.5-1kg) are ideal;
  • Pool noodle - 3 inch wide one with a one inch hole through the centre. Sold at most department stores like Target and Kmart; and
  • Wide, stretchy duct tape (or electrical PVC tape).

I'd love to know your thoughts and ideas on these gloves and if you plan on making a pair - let me know in the comments of the video!
