Gym-Proven Enhancement Hacks
Share
I’ve put together a set of quick, no-cost (or low cost) enhancement hacks for your Kewlus, squeezing every ounce of snap, speed, and feel from your cobra bag as well as adding some convenience features. Most of these tweaks come courtesy of my local boxing gym, Sanctum Forge Boxing, where multiple Kewlus cobra bags take a daily pounding in back-to-back classes. Some of these hacks might seem odd, but they have been proven to work. Bookmark this post - I’ll keep dropping fresh gems as I uncover them through our ever-growing Kewlus boxing gym/club network or hear them from the wider Kewlus community.
Tighten the Top Bar & Target Adapter Connection
The Target Ball Adapter slides onto the top bar (either the Aluminium Click Bar or the Red Bar) quite easily and can be a little loose. You can easily tighten the connection by simply wrapping a few rounds of electrical tape around the bar just below the top set of push buttons. To get the perfect tight fit, wrap a bit more tape than you think you would need and if it is too tight unwrap and cut off a small section of the tape. If it's still too tight, unwrap and cut off a bit more. Keep doing this until the connection is perfect for you.
Note, any of the Kewlus modular connections can be tightened this way by either using electrical tape or thinner, office sticky tape. This hack is less for performance enhancement, more for dampening or eliminating any unwanted clicking sounds, making your Kewlus cobra bag more a little quieter during workouts.
Tighten the Mast and Base Connector Connection
If the Mast slides into the Base Connector easily, you can easily tighten that by wrapping a few rounds of thin office sticky tape around the very bottom of the Mast. Making it as tight as possible will give you that little bit of extra snap from your cobra bag. To get the perfect tight fit, wrap a bit more tape than you think you would need and if it is too tight unwrap and cut off a small section of the tape. If it's still too tight to go in all the way, unwrap and cut off a bit more. Keep doing this until the Mast is able to go in all the way and the push buttons click into the holes in the Base Connector.
Secure the Bottom of the Target Ball with Tape
The bottom of the Target Ball has a velcro strap designed to hold the zipper puller in place. I noticed that during regular heavy use, like at my local boxing gym, the zipper puller can work loose and the zipper could begin to unzip. Use electrical tape (or boxing tape) to wrap tightly around the top of the velcro strap, covering the strap and the zipper puller well, thus preventing any chance of it ever coming loose.
Top Up the Target Ball Regularly with Air
This is not really a hack, but rather a maintenance tip that will ensure that your Kewlus has a snappy rebound. I usually top up the target ball every few days or when I feel it could do with a little extra firmness. You want it to be firm, but not rock hard so as not to cause it to start coming apart at the seams. If you have a gauge on your pump, around 7 psi is ideal. However don't trust your pump gauge in the first instance and check the firmness as you inflate it.
Oh, and one more tip: when inflating the target ball, wet the needle each time you insert it into the inflation valve - this will reduce the rate at which air escapes over time and give you a day or two extra before needing another top up.
Caution: training with a poorly inflated target ball can lead to damaging the Target Adapter. Even though the rim of the Adapter is somewhat flexible, punching an under-inflated target will impact the rim and may eventually cause it break.
Add Castor Wheels to Your Base
Many of the local boxing gyms have asked me to add castor wheels to the back of their bases so that they can easily wheel the Kewlus cobra bag out for training and wheel it back to a corner without taking anything apart. I highly recommend this hack and have attached castor wheels to all the bases that I use at home, including the OctaBase and various DIY bases. As such, I've written a whole seperate post for this, including a video that you can watch and follow, so check it out: How to Add Castor Wheels to Your Kewlus.
